Ratale Cha Khees (Grated Sweet Potatoes cooked with spices)

Food on fasting days in India is a great feast for your palette! 😉 I grew up in a very religious family with parents who used to do many fasts and on some fasting days mum used to make amazing food.  In Hinduism the food is divided in 3 categories, Tamasic (spicy), Rajsic (stimulating) and Sattvik (pure), the fasting food falls under the sattvic category. Sattvic food is often cooked on festivals or on fasting days without onion, garlic and stimulating spices and it’s quite delicious. The recipe I am sharing today is one of my favourite fasting dishes, my mum always cooked this Ratale cha khees (it literally means grated sweet potato) with Sabudana Khichdi and warm buttermilk.

This is a gluten free, can be vegan and a very healthy recipe, I also like to make this dish breakfast or light dinner.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg sweet potatoes grated
  • 4 or to taste green chillies finely chopped
  • ½ cup crushed roasted peanuts
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp ghee (optional)
  • Fresh coriander for garnishing

Instructions:

Heat oil and add cumin seeds, let them crackle.

Add the grated sweet potatoes and keep it stirring till it becomes golden brown. Add salt and peanuts, keep it covered for 5 minutes.

Add in the lime juice, sugar and ghee (you can skip it if you want to keep it vegan).

Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.
